The Tour.. dates and brief details.
The colourful Magical Mystery Tour bus set off from Allsop Place, North West London, on Monday 11 September 1967, with Paul McCartney, film crew, and
various passengers. The first stop was at Virginia Water to collect John, George and Ringo, and with a
growing convoy of press, fans and photographers behind them, the Mystery Tour filming was under way.
Heading West from London, driver Alf Manders took the
A30 towards Basingstoke and onto Teignmouth in Devon for their first night stay.
On Tuesday 12th they continued west, and intended to
visit the annual Widecombe Fair, in Devon, but that plan was scrapped when the bus got stuck on a narrow bridge while taking a short cut to avoid traffic jams.
Chaos ensued when the bus had to reverse quite a way back to turn around ! They eventually arrived at
Plymouth for a lunch stop, and did some interviews for
the ensuing press, before joining the A38 and A30 via
Liskeard, Bodmin, and on to their destination Newquay.
Over the next three days the group filmed in Porth, Watergate Bay, Holywell Bay, Tregurrian, and around
their base at The Atlantic Hotel.
The bus departed for a return to London on the morning of Friday 15th September, calling at Roman Road, Taunton, for fish and chips !!
Filming continued on the following week at West Malling in Kent, where the group had access to a dissused WW2 airfield, using it for many scenes that appear in the original film.
